About Ohrid
Ohrid is widely regarded as the cultural and spiritual heart of Macedonia. Situated on the western shore of Lake Ohrid — which borders Albania — the city is one of the few places in the world to hold dual UNESCO World Heritage status, recognised for both its outstanding natural environment and its extraordinary cultural and historical significance.
Often called the "Jerusalem of the Balkans", Ohrid is said to have once had 365 churches — one for every day of the year. Today, the city's medieval architecture, Byzantine churches, and Hellenistic ruins draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, making it the country's most visited destination.
In recent years Ohrid has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure, with restored waterfront promenades, improved pedestrian zones in the Old Town, and a growing number of quality restaurants and boutique hotels. Summer months (June–September) are the most popular, but spring and autumn offer a quieter, equally beautiful experience.
